Despite the religious trappings of their operations, the Mechanicus does know how their technology works - how could they not? They couldn't maintain such complex and venerable war machines as the Titans - or hell, starships themselves - if they didn't have a fairly comprehensive idea of how it all works. A great deal is often made of the purported ignorance of the Adeptus Mechanicus perhaps more than is warranted.
